Accelerating Success

STEM3 Academy has set a blistering pace. In August of last year we opened the high school. Some four months later, we opened the middle school, and now there are plans in place to open an elementary school in the fall of this year. Why the rapid expansion? Why now?

As we mentioned in a previous post, there are advantages to having the three schools: lower, middle and upper, under one umbrella. It allows the rationalization of the curriculum, it allows us to begin computer science and programming (for example) in elementary school, to teach advanced math in middle school so that students might already have taken Algebra 1 and even Geometry prior to graduating middle school. It allows us to view the whole curriculum, from K through 12, as a unity with the single-minded purpose of providing the most thorough, broad-based and engaging education for students’ possible. But there are other reasons besides.

We believe that a strong education should allow each child to flourish. It should focus on the child’s strengths. It should focus on the whole child and not just on the weaknesses or those parts of the child that need support. And that is as true of students in the elementary grades as it is in middle or high school. The goal is to identify and encourage, nurturing and developing areas of interest and aptitudes, to turn strengths into excellences, and in so doing transform our students into their best selves.

The model we have implemented recognizes that personal expression captures the uniqueness in us all, and so we provide the resources (both material and human) to aid each child in finding their unique voice. We want each of them to make their unique contribution, and in so doing realize their own unique promise. This is what we owe them—and that is our goal.

  1. Excellent points. A school that will help a child develop that is now expanding to all levels, is such great news! #Stem3empowers
